Wood carving is a traditional craft of Benaras, Uttar Pradesh. The gular wood that had been chiselled into numerous objects to perfection told unique mythological, and religious stories of the city, and its people.
Toys and idols of gods and goddesses are prepared by cutting, peeling and shaping the wood with knives, and other equipment. The colors used to paint the toys are bright, and often primary colors. The tools used are a saw, and chisel. The idols can be found in all sizes, from a 1-inch idol to large 2ft tall pieces. Traditional designs are carved on wood, and then painted over, giving the whole object a rich look.
