Nirmal toys
Telangana
Nirmal toys, a traditional Indian craft from Telangana, are hand-carved wooden figures known for their smooth finish, vivid colors, and intricate detailing. Produced exclusively in the town of Nirmal, these toys are typically shaped as animals, birds, mythological characters, and rural scenes, each piece reflecting the unique artistry of the region’s craftsmen.
The origins of Nirmal toys trace back over 400 years, with the Naqqash artisan community believed to have migrated from Rajasthan to Nirmal in the 17th century. Under the patronage of local chieftain Nimma Naidu, these artisans established their craft, which flourished through the support of the Kakatiya dynasty and later the Nizams of Hyderabad. Over generations, the Naqqash adapted their skills, drawing inspiration from Mughal miniatures and local folklore, and passed down their techniques within families and community guilds.
The process of making Nirmal toys begins with the selection of locally sourced softwood, known as poniki or white sander. Artisans carve the wood into desired shapes and smooth the surface using a paste made from sawdust and tamarind seeds, called Chinta Lappam. Once the base is prepared, the toys are hand-painted with bright oil or enamel paints, often featuring natural motifs and playful expressions. A final coat of varnish gives each toy its signature glossy finish, protecting the colors and adding to the tactile appeal.
Today, Nirmal toys are crafted by skilled artisans, many of whom are organized into cooperatives such as the Nirmal Toys Industrial Cooperative Society. The craft continues to provide livelihoods for local families, with workshops and small-scale units producing toys for both domestic and export markets. While traditional animal and bird figures remain popular, artisans have also introduced new designs and themes to suit contemporary tastes, ensuring the craft’s relevance in modern homes and gifting culture.
What sets Nirmal toys apart is their distinctive sheen, smooth contours, and the meticulous handwork that goes into each piece. The toys are valued for their durability, child-safe materials, and the way they capture regional stories through form and color.
