Indigenous to the eastern belt of India, especially Tribal Odisha, Dhokra is a traditional non-ferrous metal casting technique whose origin can be traced to the 4000-year old Indus Valley Civilization. The product of dhokra artisans are in great demand in domestic and foreign markets because of primitive simplicity, enchanting folk motifs and forceful form.
I have been the head of a NGO which promotes crafts by women in Odisha. We have promoted craftswomen in Dhokra, tribal jewellery, Applique, Coir toys, Golden grass, teracotta and Art textiles. We work with Odisha artisan clusters.
