Madhubani painting
BIHAR
Mellifluous in its name and form, Madhubani paintings are a product of the Mithila region where marshy swamps have bamboos and lotus buds blooming abound. The art heavily depicts the local flora and fauna of the expanse.
Derived from the bhitti-chitra or wall art, Madhubani art is often symbolic in nature with depictions of gods, goddesses, and mythological figures, to lotuses, turtles, snakes, fishes and other such staple motifs. For instance, the turtle represents a symbol of Vishnu in one of his avatars; the snake is venerated as the guardian of the underworld; the lotus, and bamboo signify feminine, and masculine sexuality respectively.
