Coconut Based Crafts

Kerela | Tamil Nadu | Karnataka

Coconut shells find new life in the skilled hands of Indian artisans, transformed into functional art that echoes the rhythms of coastal life. Coconut-based craft is a traditional Indian craft practiced mainly in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, where the coconut palm flourishes. Artisans use discarded coconut shells to create bowls, cups, vases, jewelry, utensils, and decorative items, each piece reflecting the resourcefulness and creativity of its maker.

This craft has deep roots in the coastal communities of South India, especially among the Vishwakarma caste in Kerala. Historically, coconut shell craft provided affordable household items and ceremonial objects, with techniques and designs passed down through generations. The craft evolved from simple utility wares to intricate decorative pieces, often adorned with brass or painted motifs.

The process begins with selecting mature coconut shells, which are cleaned, cut, and shaped using hacksaws, chisels, and files. After scooping out the flesh, artisans sand and buff the shells to a smooth finish. Some items are further embellished with brass inlay, painting, or natural polish. Coir fiber, extracted from the husk, is spun and woven into ropes, mats, and baskets. The entire process emphasizes handwork, sustainability, and minimal waste.

Coconut-based craft stands out for its eco-friendly materials, durability, and unique textures. Each item carries the natural grain and color of the shell, making every piece distinct. The craft’s sustainable appeal and adaptability have secured its place in both local and export markets, especially as demand for green alternatives rises. Challenges remain in standardization and modernization, but ongoing innovation and artisan networks sustain its growth.
