Benaras Wood Carving
BENARAS, UTTAR PRADESH
Wood carving is a traditional craft of Benaras. The gular wood that had been chiselled numerous objects to perfection told unique mythological, and religious stories of the city, and its people. The tiny wooden gods and goddesses were carved and painted in amazing detail thanks to the traditional craftsmen adept in the skill.
Toys and idols of gods and Goddesses are prepared by cutting, peeling and shaping the wood with knives, and other equipment. The colours used to paint the toys are bright, and often primary colours. The ceremonial parrot is painted in green, yellow (turmeric) and red (alta). The tools used are saw and chisel. The idols can be found in all sizes, from a 1-inch idol to large 2ft tall pieces. Traditional designs are carved on wood and then painted over, giving the whole object a rich look.
